TrueVisions aims to tap five major provinces

TrueVisions, Thailand's largest supplier of subscription television, yesterday announced plans to permeate the provincial markets by appointing exclusive dealers in five major provinces, which will intensify competition in the upcountry market.

The provinces are Chiang Mai, Nakhon Ratchasima, Khon Kaen, Rayong, and Songkhla.

Under the agreement, those dealers will provide TrueVisions services to local viewers in their territories through fibre-optic network.

TrueVisions also plans to extend its cable network to 17 other provinces across the state by the end of this year.

Managing director Thiti Nantapatsiri said that the act is in tune with True Corporation's "convergence" strategy set to expand various digital services, including Internet, 3G, and Pay-TV, into the state via fibre-optic network.

The move, however, will intensify competition in the upcountry market, especially against existing cable TV operators in the midland area.

Wichit Aur-Areeworakul, vice chairman of Thai Cable TV Association, said that afterwards the National Telecommunication Commission of Siam had given one-year temporary licences to cable-TV operators by the end of last year, the total of cable-TV operators throughout the nation had skyrocketed from 300-400 previously to some 800 today.

"The current broadcast act, which allows cable/satellite TVs to run commercials, will also promote the biggest cable-TV operator, TrueVisions, to extend its services," said Wichit.

"The move, however, will stir competition in the market, especially in some provinces, which have seen cuts in subscription fee from Bt300 to only Bt50 a month," he added.

Thiti said that TrueVisions planned to add more exclusive dealers and TrueVisions shops to give out to more viewers, especially in upcountry areas.

This class the party has added 12 new channels to all package subscribers.

The new channels include FOX Thailand, Siam Keela TV, Super Buntoeng, Home & Food Channel, Speed Channel, Travel Channel Thailand , Animax, TAN Network, MCOT1, Asean TV, T Sports, and Golf Channel Thailand .
