As far as I love it even is. As I grew up in UK we had no choice, saying you were atheist or agnostic did not justify you from lessons, only muslim, sikh, hindu could be excused. In one way it can be a serious thing to read about numerous faiths but I distinctly remember it being biased towards christianity and maybe brief lessons about Islam and sikh.
If it is compulsory why are there favoritism`s towards other faiths being excluded or can anyone be excused now? Should it be not start of instruction at all and let people get out however they want later on in life? Are schools still singing christian hymns and prayers in morning assemblies?

That`s disgusting that it is compulsory. It`s not in Australia - thankfully. If it were religious studies, in which all religions were studied equally and no actual faith practises went on, I would really enjoy that field because I know other cultures. But to really pull you into learning about Christianity? That`s wrong. And as if we don`t know enough about it already - who needs to learn who Jesus is?

There was a compulsory RE class in my high school that gave equal time to all "major" world religions (i.e. no time to scientology and an equal slot to, say, chinese religion and christianity).
Still, I`d have much rather spent those four hours a week for two days taking a useful class.
I never heard of anyone getting out of it as it was, technically, just an informative "history" class. There was no ritualistic participation of any sort.

I don`t believe schools should engage children in practicing religion (unless private institutions, of course).
I do think that schools should teach students about religions so that kids will see them in the circumstance of history, literature, art, etc_ otherwise we`re doing them a disservice.
