IFAI Requests Account Data Released from the National ImmigrationInstitute

07/23/11The Federal Institute of Admission to Information and Protection of Information (Instituto Federal de Acceso a la Informacin y Proteccin de Datos, IFAI) in Mexico recently ordered the National Immigration Institute (Instituto Nacional de Migracin, INM) to release documents and information for accountability purposes under a federally instated transparency program.

The INM initially refused to publish information for the years 2007 through 2009, however IFAI Commissioner Maria Elena Prez-Jan ruled the data necessary under the 2007-2012 National Development Plan (Plan Nacional de Desarrollo 2007-2012).

Prez-Jan explained that to meet the objectives of the National Development Plan, which focuses on increasing transparency and accountability throughout Mexican organizations and agencies, the 2008-2012 National Accountability, Transparency, and Combating Corruption Program (Programa Nacional de Rendicin de Cuentas, Transparencia y Combate a la Corrupcin 2008-2012) was implemented. The latter plan requires that the INM comply with the 2007-2012 National Development Plan. The IFAI Commissioner first filed the charge after having just received partial documents from the INM, calling the standard information incomplete, and argument that it does not make all the support to follow with the program, according to El Universal. The INM has yet to react to the request.
